Hello! Shut Up & Write!® hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a timed period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share progress. Finlay or Jez will host (depending on availability). These are in-person sessions and are super casual! Location: Gaelic Lane Coffee House, Gaelic Lane 1 Gaelic Ln, Aberdeen AB10 1JF What to Expect Gaelic Lane Cafe opens at 9am. There’s a good chance at least one of the hosts will be there at that time, so any early birds are welcome to come along between 9am and 10am - however the session proper starts at 10am. We normally take a long table, depending on numbers attending we sometimes break out onto surrounding tables. Look out for the SUAW table topper! Do say ‘hello’ if It’s your first time. The session is very easy going. After a bit of chit-chat over coffee and food, we set a timer for an hour and a quarter at about 10:30, and while the timer is running everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time. Afterward, we’ll have an optional time to chat further and get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. They’re not classes or workshops, just protected time to get your head down and write! Rest assured, there’s no pressure to share what you’re working on, no one will read or critique your writing. Being Late is Okay! Just show up and get settled, then check in after the session. If you are on time, please be willing to make room for any friendly latecomers. What Should I Bring? Whatever you need to be able to write! Maybe make sure your device is charged up (although there are some power sockets near one of the tables). Be aware that, while the group will literally ‘shut up and write’ when the timer is running, it can sometimes get a little noisy in the cafe - if this affects your concentration, consider bringing some noise cancelling headphones/earplugs.
