Organizer Resources · Getting Started

Welcome, Organizer! Whether you're hosting in-person or online, you're stepping into a powerful role: helping writers show up for themselves and make real progress on their work. This page covers what Shut Up & Write! is, what your role actually involves, and how to use this toolkit. If you're still finishing application, training, or your Community Team call, continue in Organizer Onboarding — creating a group unlocks once that's complete.

What Is Shut Up & Write!?

Shut Up & Write! (SUAW) is a global community of writers who believe writing thrives in community. Since 2007, what began as a few friends writing together in a San Francisco café has grown into thousands of sessions worldwide. The formula hasn't changed: a set time and place where writers gather, write quietly together for an hour, and celebrate their progress. Our events are free and open to all — no critiquing, no pressure, no judgment. As an organizer, you're carrying that mission forward: you're not only carving out time for your own writing, you're creating a space for others to pursue theirs.

Your Role as Organizer

You're a friendly facilitator and host — not a teacher or a critic. Your role comes down to four things:

How to Use This Toolkit

Every page in the toolkit has a Toolkit Contents menu at the top so you can jump anywhere without hunting. On pages with format-specific guidance, use the "My group is" toggle to show only in-person or only online content — your choice is remembered as you move between pages.

You're not doing this alone. The SUAW Community Team is here whenever you have a question, hit a snag, or just want a pep talk. Let's get started!
