Shut Up & Write!

Sessions are free.
The scaffolding isn’t.

Shut Up & Write!® sessions are free. Writers find a session, show up, connect with others, and get writing done. It costs nothing and never will.

What costs money is everything behind the scenes: the platform writers use to find sessions and commit to going, the tools organizers rely on, and the work that keeps the method consistent as the community grows.

Your donation funds that.

Where the money goes.

Sessions are free. Organizers give their time willingly. The structure that holds hundreds of sessions a week together is what costs money.

Organizers — The people who hold the table

They found a café, set up, and kept showing up. We give them onboarding, materials, and a direct line when things get weird. That support is why a writer in São Paulo and a writer in Glasgow both recognize what they walked into. That consistency takes tending. Guides get written, tools get built, and when something changes we update them. The work has kept evolving since 2007.

Platform — The plumbing

Event pages, sign-ups, reminders, and online sessions all have to work. Writers need to find a group and keep coming back, and that only happens because something reliable is running underneath.

Privacy — Our own tools

We built them instead of renting from companies whose business model is selling writers to advertisers. It costs more, and it’s worth it.

Method — Keeping it simple

Without attention, sessions drift: more rules, more performance, less writing. Simplicity is load-bearing. Someone has to protect it.

Research — The long game

We study why communal writing works, and we partner with universities, libraries, and nonprofits to bring it to more people.

Simplicity doesn’t maintain itself.

Shut Up & Write!® works because the method is simple and consistent. Show up, share what you’re working on, write in silence, wrap up, hang around. That’s it.

Left alone, that simplicity drifts: sessions get more complicated, expectations creep in, read-alouds appear. The thing that made it work quietly stops working.

Donations are how we hold the line. They support the organizers running sessions, the platform that connects writers to them, and the steady, unglamorous work of keeping the method clear as the community grows.

Real money and steady work keep sessions this simple and consistent.

The questions people actually ask

Is Shut Up & Write! really free?

Yes. Sessions are free to attend and they’re staying that way. Donations support what makes that possible: organizers, the platform, the method itself.

If sessions are community-led, why do you need donations?

Community-led isn’t the same as cost-free. Organizers give their time freely, and the sessions themselves don’t cost money to run. The structure around them does: tools, support, infrastructure, the work of keeping the method consistent.

Where does my donation go?

It keeps the platform reliable, supports organizers, protects the method, and funds partnerships that bring communal writing to more people.

Why did you build your own platform?

To protect writer data, mostly. The off-the-shelf options come with commercial incentives that distort how communities work, and we’d rather not import those.

Do organizers get paid?

No. Organizers run sessions as part of the community. Donations support the systems and the support structure around them, not the people running them.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, in the U.S. Shut Up & Write! is part of Writing Partners, a registered 501(c)(3). Your receipt has the EIN on it.

Can I cancel a recurring donation anytime?

Yes. Cancel or adjust whenever you want.

Can I donate in someone else’s name?

Yes. Contact us and we’ll set it up.

Can institutions or foundations donate?

Yes. Contact us and we’ll find an option that fits your mission and ours.
