About Shut Up & Write!
What is Shut Up & Write!?
Shut Up & Write! is a free, global writing community that hosts regular in-person and online writing sessions. Writers gather, briefly introduce themselves and what they are working on, then write independently for a focused block of time. There is no critique, no sharing of work, and no instruction. It is structured co-working for writers.
How did Shut Up & Write! get started?
The first session took place in 2007 at a café in San Francisco. The idea was simple: create a regular time and place for writers to show up and write together, without the social overhead of workshops or critique groups. The concept spread as writers in other cities started their own groups using the same format.
Is this a class or workshop?
No. There is no instruction, no curriculum, and no assignments. Sessions are purely about creating dedicated writing time alongside other writers. Organizers facilitate the format but do not teach or coach.
Do I have to share my writing?
No. There are no read-alouds, no critique rounds, and no pressure to share. Your writing stays completely private.
What kind of writing can I work on?
Any kind. Writers work on novels, academic papers, screenplays, poetry, blog posts, journaling, freelance articles, and more. All genres and project types are welcome.
I’m new to writing. Can I still join?
Yes. Writers of all experience levels attend, from first-time writers to published professionals. There are no skill requirements or prerequisites.
Is it really free?
Yes. Shut Up & Write! is operated by Writing Partners, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All sessions are free to attend. There are no membership fees, subscriptions, or premium tiers.
In-Person Sessions
What can I expect at an in-person session?
You arrive at the venue — usually a café, library, or community space — and look for the group. There is a brief round of introductions where everyone shares their first name and what they plan to work on. Then the group writes independently for 30 to 60 minutes. At the end, writers can optionally share a sentence about how their session went.
What should I bring?
Just yourself, your writing project, and whatever you write with — a laptop, tablet, or notebook. Most sessions happen at cafés where you can order a drink if you like, but there is no obligation to purchase anything.
How do I find a session near me?
Browse writing groups by city to find sessions in your area. Groups run on regular schedules, typically weekly or biweekly.
Online Sessions
How do online sessions work?
Online sessions follow the same format as in-person groups, adapted for video. You join a Zoom call, there is a brief introduction round, then everyone writes independently with microphones muted for 30 to 60 minutes. Camera use is optional.
What time zone are the sessions in?
Sessions are hosted by organizers around the world, so there are options throughout the day across many time zones. The session listing shows times converted to your local time zone.
Do I need to attend every week?
No. You can attend whenever it works for you. There is no commitment, no sign-up requirement, and no penalty for missing sessions.
Organizing
What does an organizer do?
Organizers host regular writing sessions using the Shut Up & Write! format. They choose a venue and schedule, welcome attendees, facilitate introductions and the writing block, and keep the environment focused and welcoming. No teaching or writing expertise is required.
How much time does organizing take?
Most organizers spend fewer than two hours per week, including the session itself. The format is deliberately simple so that running a group is sustainable over the long term.
